Privacy
B'Aeretz collects nothing about you. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no server of ours for anything to be sent to.
The short version. Everything you do in this app stays on your phone. We could not identify you or see your activity if we wanted to, because none of it reaches us.
What is stored, and where
Saved places, your itinerary, notes, corrected opening hours, which places you have ticked off, and your settings are held in your phone's own storage. They are not backed up to us, not synced, and not readable by anyone else. Deleting the app deletes them.
Location
If you allow it, the app reads your location to work out how far places are from you, to sort by what is nearest, and to know when you have arrived at a stop on a guided walk. This happens entirely on the device. Your location is never transmitted to us or to anyone else. You can refuse it, and the app still works — it simply measures distances from a place you choose instead.
The camera and your photos
The camera is used only if you choose to photograph a kashrut certificate. Those photographs are saved to your own device or your own photo library. They are not uploaded.
Notifications
Candle-lighting reminders and walk alerts are scheduled locally by your phone. No push server is involved and nothing is registered with us.
Information the app fetches
To show weather, currency rates, ground heights for walks, and up-to-date Jewish calendar times, the app requests data from public sources. These requests carry no account, no identifier and nothing about you beyond what any web request necessarily reveals to the service answering it — your device's IP address and an approximate location for the forecast. Each of these providers has its own privacy policy:
- The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (weather)
- Hebcal (Jewish calendar times)
- Open Topo Data and Open-Elevation (ground heights)
- ExchangeRate-API (indicative currency rates)
- Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons (background and photographs)
- OpenStreetMap, via the Overpass API (nearby businesses)
Opening directions hands over to Apple Maps or Google Maps, which are governed by Apple's and Google's own terms and privacy policies. Tapping a link to an external listing opens your browser in the ordinary way.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and collects nothing from anybody, children included.
Changes
If this ever changes — if the app one day carried advertising, a subscription, or any form of analytics — this page would be updated before that version was released, and the app's own About screen would say so too.

B'Aeretz is an independent app and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any rabbinical authority, kashrut agency or government body. Kashrut information is reported as published by the certifying bodies and should always be confirmed against the certificate displayed at the establishment.
